An Unforgettable Experience

Making My Own Adventure

“Life is either a great adventure or nothing.” — Hellen Keller

This summer was the busiest summer I have ever had. In total, I was only home for six days. I had a lot of fun trips and new experiences, but the pinnacle of my summer was a trip that I had in late July. It was the first time that I ever went out of the country without my parents. While the first half of my summer was filled up with fun experiences, the entire time I couldn’t wait for my big trip. It occupied my thoughts and dreams for months.

Camp Belknap

Leadership and High Expectations

“I try not to have high expectations of people because it just sets you up for disappointment.”

— Famke Janssen

On a warm Wednesday morning, the 9th grade set out on a road trip to New Hampshire. We were prepared to go camping until Friday. The bus ride was long and incredibly boring, but I managed to get through it, while drifting in and out of sleep. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, we reached our destination. It was a camp on Lake Winnipesaukee. I had been to the lake before and had always thought it to be big, but when we arrived at the camp, the lake seemed bigger than I could ever imagine, and we were just on a small part of it. The camp was divided into five sections, only three of which we actually saw. We were planted in the Middler section. The Middler section consisted of eight cabins forming a semicircle around a grass baseball field. We were split up into three cabins: Cabin 3, Cabin 4 and Cabin 5. They were the most central cabins.

A Slice of Life

“You earn the respect of your piers that you play against, and they don't trash talk you.” — LaDainian Tomlinson

There was an immediate rivalry. The moment we stepped onto the campus, there was tension. We needed to know who was better, but we never even got to practice on the same field. We were incomparable.  Finally it was decided, we would have a scrimmage against team 2 on the last day of training camp. That was when they started to get very arrogant. Their head coach was young, in his mid 20’s, and only egged them on. They started talking trash about how they were going to annihilate us. They thought, based on no reasoning other then them having good practices, that they were much better than us. We didn’t respond to their verbal abuse, although all we wanted was to hit them. We didn’t want to stoop to their level. Our team continued to train hard, although we frequently inquired about the other team to our coaches, wondering which team was actually better.

A New Season

“You get a new year, you get a new start, you get a new opportunity.”  — Billy Butler

A new NFL season is on the horizon. A new opportunity for a team to win their first Super Bowl. A new chance for a player to have a breakout year. An NFL season brings opportunities for each team and each individual player, but most teams end the season disappointed. Each NFL season brings along new questions and new opportunities and this season will be as fun as any other.
