A World Without Diversity

Diversity is necessary for a healthy society. Throughout my life I have learned that you must embrace diversity. Diversity is all around you and without it life would be bland. Diversity is what adds vibrance to life. diversity could be very small and specific, or broad and inclusive.

What Diversity Means to me. When someone says the word “diversity” most people think of race or heritage. However, that’s not what it means to me; it is more fluid. Diversity could mean anything: culture, race, heritage, life experiences, wealth, religion, geographic location, ideas or personalities. Limiting your view of diversity to just one or two of these things narrows the power of its impact. When you include many or all of these factors into your outlook of diversity it lets you appreciate and learn from all the differences between people all around you. It's important to include many factors of diversity to grow as a person.

I have had some very powerful experiences so far in my life through traveling to new places around the globe, which have allowed me to witness how different the world really is. When I was in 2nd grade my entire family took a trip to Kenya, because my grandmother was born there, and witnessed the differences Kenyan culture. We went on a safari, where we got to meet a local tribe. Their culture was different from ours, Everything from their; clothes, foods and celebrations were new to me. Even though I was an outsider they still welcomed me in. If I had not met the tribe my in Kenya would have been bland.

Even in my hometown or at Fenn school, I notice diversity in different ways and different places. Diversity is not only where you are from and what culture you have, but it is also dependent on personality, life experiences, and beliefs. Alex Chayrigues is funny and energetic. Meanwhile, Timmy Smith is quiet and hardworking. If everybody at Fenn acted the same and had the same experiences, I wouldn't have stayed here as long as I have. It's the small differences like these that make Fenn and the world as a whole interesting.

Without Diversity the world would be black and white. We need all the unique colors and shades in order to be able to enjoy life to the fullest extent. You are doing yourself a disservice by not embracing Diversity. Without all the unique differences among people society would be a bleak, dead landscape.

Sun Valley Water Tank

The Sunset from the water tank at the top of the hill near my grandparents house in Idaho is like no other. When you are up there you can look down on the surrounding area and town. The sky will always be dark orange when it sets. It is completely silent except for the chirping crickets. It is always nice and you can feel the warm air all round you. Everyday my family and I walk up to the top of the hill to watch the sunset. I was very sad when I had to leave. I love Sun Valley and having to let go of it is always hard. Hiking to the water tank is so fun and it's upsetting knowing it will be a full year until I can do it again. I do get to come back in the winter but hiking and mountain biking are also very hard to let go of. The water tank is special to me because of how much of my time in Idaho was spent up there. Everyday, my siblings and I would play on top of it and we would also watch the sunset. It's a place where I don't need to worry about school or anything else. It's so calming watching the sunset and hiking during the day. I only get to see my grandparents when I go to Sun Valley, so it's always nice to be with them. The water tank and Sun Valley in general are one of my favorite places on earth. The water tank is special to me because of how much of my time in Idaho was spent up there.
